Our industry is slowly boring respondents to death. The novelty of taking a survey online is wearing off, resulting in lower online participation rates and higher online survey break-off rates. In response to this growing issue, Polimetrix has created a group of instrumentation widgets within our online survey platform using AJAX. A new breed of Web 2.0 applications leverage AJAX (an acronym for Asynchronous JavaScript and XML) yet it is not a new technology; rather, Microsoft created the framework for AJAX in the early 90's and developers have recently combined these technologies that most browsers now support.
Our online survey platform engages respondents using a richer, more interactive interface:
- Placement widgets enable respondents to not only place themselves on a highly attenuated slider scale, but to then overlay other individuals, brands, products and concepts on the same scale, creating a rich and holistic perspective.
- Ranking widgets that allow respondents to interactively drag and drop rich content such as images and logos into place.
- Dynamic grids that end the tedium of long attribute lists by highlighting and automatically advancing rows to speed the process, eliminate straight-lining and engage the respondent.
- Pop-up questions that allow for a follow-on question to appear on the same screen for further clarification without being blocked by browser technologies.
Here's where you can see some of our Survey Widgets™ in action:

"These start-up companies with smart developers can take AJAX and without any constraints some (tool) vendor set up, can do anything they imagine." --Richard-Monson-Haefel, Burton Group Analyst
"Increasingly, big companies, like Google and Yahoo are building applications with AJAX. Some of Google's standout AJAX applications include GMail and Google Maps.." --Tom Taulli, Forbes.com
