For Yankee’s, winning the World Series may be easier than winning over the American public

PALO ALTO, California — November 3, 2009. Although the New York Yankees hold a 3-2 lead over the Philadelphia Phillies in the World Series, they don’t necessarily have the country on their side. In fact, in the latest Economist/YouGov Poll, America is divided on whether they’d prefer the Yankees or the Phillies to win the World Series this week. 32% prefer the Phillies, 26% the Yankees. The rest of the country (43%) just doesn’t care.

But the Yankees are seen as the sport’s dominant team. By nearly three to one (44% to 15%), Americans think the Yankees WILL win.

However, a lot of Americans aren’t following the games. Only about a third say they follow Major League Baseball even somewhat closely; only 12% follow it very closely. Men are more likely than women to be baseball fans (as is the case with most sports).

Methodology

These results are from a weekly YouGov public opinion poll. The poll surveyed 1,000 respondents and was fielded from November 1-3, 2009. Results from interviews conducted online by members of YouGov’s PollingPoint panel are representative of the U.S. adult population. The margin of error for this poll is +/- 3.9%.
